Unelected federal bureaucrats are forcing New York City to spend $27 million to replace their street signs. Our bureaucratic overlords maintain that streets signs must contain both upper and lower case letters, instead of just capital letters! Do you feel grateful that you're being protected from upper case streets signs?

This dictatorial mandate comes from the Federal Highway Administration, and applies to every community in America, not just New York City.

But don't blame this outrage on the busy-body Democrats. This isn't an Obama directive. The rule was actually promulgated back in 2003 -- during the Bush Administration.

Regardless of which party rules, very little is done to stop unfunded mandates or bureaucratic law-making. The problem is, Republicans have been promising to get rid of unfunded mandates since their so-called "Contract With America" way back in 1994!

The GOP controlled Congress and the White House for 6 years, but did exactly nothing to honor their promise.

This shows why we must remain committed to principles, not parties or politicians.

Now, here is what can be done about unfunded mandates, and you'll only read these next two ideas HERE, in the Downsizer-Dispatch.

First, New York City could tell the feds to, "Go to hell." City officials swore an oath to the Constitution too. They've read the highest law in the land. They know this is wrong.

That would be called, "nullification." To help promote this idea, Downsize DC President Jim Babka spoke at the Nullify Now! Conference in Orlando on October 10. There will also be two other opportunities to see (and meet) him this weekend. You can see the details here.

Second, if a single sitting GOP member of Congress was serious about fixing unfunded mandates imposed by un-elected bureaucrats, then he or she could sponsor DownsizeDC.org's Write the Laws Act.

There are candidates who've pledged to do this, and you can read their names here.

But no incumbent member of Congress has yet stepped forward to introduce this powerful bill which would restore ALL legislative power to the House and Senate, and deny any legislative power to the Executive Branch, just as the Founders intended.

The Republicans tell us they believe in small government and the Constitution, but if that were really true they would introduce this bill.

Allowing bureaucrats to issue dictates that have the force of law amounts to legislation without representation. How un-Constitutional is that? How un-American? How hypocritical, especially for GOP members?

Please send a letter demanding that your representatives introduce and support the Write the Laws Act.

The FHWA is requiring street signs nationwide be replaced so that, for example, MAIN ST becomes Main St. Fonts must also be standardized. This underscores the need for the WTLA . . .

* My state and local governments must pay for these changes by taxing me, even though we weren't represented in this ruling

I demand you do two things:

* Repeal the FHWA street sign requirement and return all powers of traffic control and safety to the states, exactly as the Tenth Amendment requires
* Introduce the Write the Laws Act so that Congress alone will write our laws and regulations, as the Constitution also requires

If you claim you want smaller, less-intrusive, common-sense government, then show me you really mean it by introducing DownsizeDC's Write the Laws Act.

There's a good chance we've defeated the cumbersome food safety bill. "The Hill" reports that Congressional leaders pulled the bill even though they had the votes to pass it.

Now why on earth would they do that? It's because . . .

Pressure works!

We and our allies stirred up enough dust to make the politicians nervous about passing this bill before the election. And they'll no longer have the votes once the people fire the Democratic majority. The final danger is that the Dems will try to force it through during a lame-duck session. We'll have to be on guard against that. Meanwhile . . .

We can celebrate another success.

Rand Paul invokes "reading the bills," and "downsizing the government" in his latest TV commercial.

And, I'll be traveling through Florida next week, promoting Downsize DC, and speaking at the NullifyNow conference.

This last item has forced a change in our work schedule. We're going to have to delay, by one week, showing you the new home page for the new website for the Downsize DC Foundation, which is the educational arm of Downsize DC. Meanwhile . . .

There are bills to pay, and we've only sent one fundraising message all month. We got our head above water with the assistance we received in August when we had to shut down for a day, but we want to keep it that way. Today is the first day of October. House Minority Leader Boehner joins bi-partisan coalition supporting Federal Reserve transparency

ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA – H.R. 1207, The Federal Reserve Transparency Act of 2009, yesterday surged past the 200 co-sponsor mark, nearing a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill, introduced by Congressman Ron Paul (R- TX), now has 207 cosponsors including 51 Democrats.

Signing on to the bill yesterday were Republican Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and influential Rules Committee Ranking Member David Drier (R-CA). The bill has gained 28 co-sponsors just in the month of June.

Congressman Paul's legislation is aimed at pulling back the curtain from a secretive and unaccountable Federal Reserve. Congress and the American people have minimal, if any, oversight over trillions of dollars that the Fed controls.

With recent bailouts and spending decisions shining a spotlight on the actions of the Federal Reserve, more and more pressure is bearing down on Congress to take action and demand accountability and transparency.

Minority Leader Boehner joins a group of legislators from across the ideological spectrum. These Representatives include Rep. Tom Price (R-GA), head of the conservative Republican Study Committee, and Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), former head of the liberal Progressive Caucus.

“Americans from every walk of life, across the country, are speaking out and demanding transparency at the Federal Reserve,” said Campaign for Liberty President John Tate. “Members of Congress, whether they are conservatives, moderates, progressives, business Republicans, libertarians or blue dog Democrats, are listening to their outraged constituents and coming together to support H.R. 1207.”

"The American people have had enough. Enough of an out of control Fed, enough of run away government spending and enough of the secretive Federal Reserve practices that won't even allow us to know where our money is going." continued Mr. Tate. "And the message is getting through loud and clear as indicated by the overwhelming support for this legislation across the country and in the halls of Congress."

H.R. 1207, would open up the Fed’s funding facilities, such as the Primary Dealer Credit Facility, Term Securities Lending Facility, and Term Asset-Backed Securities Lending Facility to Congressional oversight and an audit by the non-partisan Government Accountability Office. Additionally, audits could include discount window operations, open market operations, and agreements with foreign central banks, such as ongoing dollar swap operations with European central banks.
