Downsize DC MAY be on the verge of another victory, but it's up to you to keep up the pressure.
You see, last November, a Senate committee unanimously approved a poisonous "food safety" bill, S.510.
Seven months later, however, the bill still hasn't reached the Senate floor.
Why?
Because of you!
DC Downsizers and a broad coalition of farm activists objected to the draconian regulations that would destroy small farms and the organic food industry.
In response, Sen. Jon Tester proposed some amendments that would exempt family farms and small food processors. Other Senators have proposed other amendments, and Majority Leader Harry Reid is facing division within his own party on the bill.
It's possible that Sen. Reid won't bring S.510 to the floor at all this year. This would be ideal.
It's also possible that the Senate will debate the bill sometime in the coming weeks, so let's be prepared . . .
* tell Congress you oppose this dangerous food "safety" bill
* and at the very least, insist on Sen. Tester's amendments
Please send your message using DownsizeDC.org's Freedom to Farm campaign.
You may borrow from or copy this letter . . .
In general, I oppose federal "safety" regulations. Our food supply would be safer if the free market and the states supplied the regulations.
* Private trade associations and certification boards will compete to win consumer confidence in the safety and reliability of their products
* Firms that sell liability insurance would have flexible, site-specific safety requirements instead of one-size-fits-all regulations
* Consumers would be more likely to purchase from local growers and sellers that they know and trust
* States could learn from each other the most effective government regulations, if any are needed
In principle, then, I believe you should oppose S.510 and work to repeal most of the federal laws and regulations on the books.
I also demand that you make the bill "less bad" by insisting on the inclusion of Sen. Tester's amendments. These amendments would exempt . . . http://tester.senate.gov/Newsroom/pr_041410_foodsafety.cfm
* Producers that add value to food through processing and whose adjusted gross income is less than $500,000 per year;
* Producers who sell their food directly to market (such as farmers’ markets).
Please support other amendments that would make the bill less burdensome for farmers and small processors. There will never be a 100% guarantee that all food will always be safe, but . . .
* recent food-borne illness outbreaks have not been caused by family farms and other small businesses
* if outbreaks were to occur, the number of victims will be small and the effects will be localized
In contrast, excessive fees and regulations could wipe out many small farms and businesses. This would make our food LESS safe because no amount of regulation or inspection will prevent every outbreak, and outbreaks in the corporate food chain will have far more victims and more widespread effects.
We do not need more federal regulation. We would be safer if we had more freedom.
END LETTER
You can send your letter using DownsizeDC.org's Educate the Powerful System.
And we encourage you to share this message with your friends. Retweet it.
Thanks for being a DC Downsizer!

WICKED WEATHER
Earthquake Shakes New York: Did You Even Notice?
http://nyti.ms/9ApxhD
Quote of the Day: "As we noted in our amicus brief supporting Citizens United, the FEC now has regulations for 33 types of contributions and speech, and 71 different types of speakers. Regardless of the abstract merit of the various arguments for and against limits on political contributions and spending, this very complexity raises serious concerns about whether the law can be enforced consistent with the First Amendment." -- 8 former Commissioners of the Federal Election Commission, writing in the Wall Street Journal, May 19, 2010
The word "disclose," as used in the title of the DISCLOSE Act, is a silly acronym that stands for "Democracy Is Strengthened by Casting Light On Spending in Elections."
We couldn't disagree more.
The provisions of this bill (H.R. 5175 and S. 3295) would actually...
* Protect incumbents from competition by other candidates, and from criticism by citizens' groups.
* Violate your First Amendment rights to free speech, free press, and assembly.
* Harm your First Amendment right to petition Congress for a redress of grievances.
* Crush your Ninth Amendment right to associate with others for peaceful purposes, such as defeating incumbent office holders and electing new representatives.
It's important to understand that . . .
* Incumbent politicians support campaign finance laws, like the DISCLOSE Act, because these laws kill your ability to fire and replace them.
* Media companies also love these laws because they cripple your ability to be your own media, by joining with others to fund political advertising campaigns.
Unlike you, and the political organizations you support, media companies enjoy completely unrestricted freedoms of speech, press, and association. They can raise and spend unlimited amounts . . .
* to tell you what you should believe,
* and which candidates are worth considering,
* while completely ignoring or ridiculing those candidates who don't support the Establishment Ideology of Crony Capitalism and Welfare-Warfare Statism.
Specifically, in this case, the DISCLOSE Act would harm DownsizeDC.org, Inc, and other organizations like it. This harm would come in many ways, including the following . . .
If we spend more than $10,000 on political communications during a calendar year we would have to report to the government, and to the general public, ALL donors who have given between $600 or $1,000, depending on the type of political communications we wanted to express.
This may sound trivial, but it's actually ominous . . .
* Instead of simply exercising our rights to free expression we would have to start thinking about whether or not something we wanted to say would trigger the requirements of this law.
* We would also have to start spending money that our donors gave for one purpose, such as educating the public, to comply with this law.
* These reporting requirements will also have a chilling effect on donations. Those who fear potential retaliation from Congress, or who simply value their privacy, may decide to cease making donations.
And that's exactly what the DISCLOSE proponents want -- they want to reduce political expression by groups that represent your anti-Statist ideals. They want to silence DC Downsizers and other groups that oppose the imposition of new burdens on the American people.
This danger is especially severe with larger donors who may have business interests that could be harmed by incumbent politicians. Business leaders know that politicians routinely use their power to reward friends and punish enemies. That's why the DISCLOSE Act also requires that . . .
Both the head of an organization, AND the top contributor to any broadcast ad, must both include recorded statements that they approve the message. Television ads and political mailings, must also list the top five contributors to the organization.
* Once again, this will have a chilling effect on contributions, and once again, this is what incumbent politicians want, because it will reduce the amount of criticism and competition directed at them.
* This requirement will also create administrative headaches. Fundraising materials will have to contain disclosure requirements, and database software will have to be re-programmed to account for these requirements.
* The cost of making ads will also increase, because top donors will have to travel to record their endorsements.
* The broadcast time required to say "this message was funded by... and I approve this message" will also eat into the educational portion of every ad.
In many 30-second ads, DISCLOSE would require no fewer than six statements as to who is paying for the ad (the current law already requires one such statement). These disclaimers would take up as much as half of every ad.
The DISCLOSE Act will also prohibit communications that could be interpreted as advocating a candidate's election or defeat, even if the communication doesn't specifically use those words. This is potentially the most dangerous provision of this legislation given that it is COMPLETELY SUBJECTIVE.
No one will be able to know for sure if they are violating this law when they prepare an ad or other communication, so it will be safer to simply remain silent. Or, they could choose to divert even more of their donor's money hiring lawyers before making each and every move.
We urge you to spread the word about this important issue. Forward this to friends and share on Facebook.
Thank you for being a DC Downsizer!

“[T]he NRA -- on whose board of directors I serve -- rather than holding steadfastly to its historic principles of defending the Constitution and continuing its noble fight against government regulation of political speech instead opted for a political deal borne of self-interest in exchange for ‘neutrality’ from the legislation's requirements.”
-- NRA Director Cleta Mitchell, June 17, 2010
Thursday, June 17, 2010
The above quote -- part of an editorial authored by NRA Director Cleta Mitchell -- ran in The Washington Post today.
Like Mitchell, bloggers and editorial writers around the country have lit up the Internet with the story that we have been alerting you to over the past 48 hours. Here are just some of the headlines:
* “The NRA sells out to Democrats on the First Amendment,” The Wall Street Journal
* “Conservatives take on the NRA over deal on disclosure bill,” The Washington Post
* “The National Rifle Association’s Excuse Holds No Water,” RedState.org
The conservative movement (and to be honest, many liberal organizations as well) are coming together to loudly protest the DISCLOSE Act -- legislation that threatens to gag our ability to effectively hold individual congressmen accountable in the days and weeks leading up to an election.
It is imperative that we continue hammering the Congress. But rather than cry “uncle,” liberal Democrats are now trying to buy off more groups with an exemption for those that have at least 500,000 members (rather than the higher threshold of one million, which would have applied to few groups other than the NRA).
Of course, how is the government going to know how many members an organization has? According to the legislation, each organization will have to certify to a government commission how many members they have. But what if the commission wants documentation; will the organization have to “disclose” the names of their members?
GOA, of course, will never do this. Furthermore, you should know that your Gun Owners of America can NOT be bought off. We will continue opposing this bill on principle, urging all gun groups to stick together in this fight. As we stated yesterday, we realize that: “We must all hang together, or we will all hang separately.”
GOA applauds NRA Director Cleta Mitchell for the courageous stand she took today. (You can read her editorial here.) We hope that the NRA leadership will heed her wisdom and take a stand against this bill. If they don’t, we wouldn’t be surprised if NRA members start demanding a change in their leadership. After all, the NRA has engaged in many good fights over the years, and it would be a shame to lose this VERY IMPORTANT battle because high-ranking staff led the NRA down the wrong path.
ACTION:
1. Please call your congressman today and urge him or her to oppose HR 5175. We’ve asked you to send emails before, but now on the eve before the vote, it is crucial that the phones ring off the hook. If they’re not ringing, they won’t be worried.
You can use the Talking Points below to call your Representative toll-free at 1-877-762-8762.
2. If you haven’t yet urged the NRA staff to change its position on HR 5175 and stand with Gun Owners of America, please do so. NRA Director Cleta Mitchell was absolutely correct, and the NRA leadership should heed her wisdom. You can call the NRA at (800) 392-VOTE (8683).
3. Please help Gun Owners of America to continue fighting for your rights. You can go to http://gunowners.org/contribute-to-goa.htm to help us alert as many people as possible to the DISCLOSE Act threat.
----- Talking Points for contacting your Representative -----
1. I stand with Gun Owners of America in opposing the DISCLOSE Act (HR 5175).
2. The Bill of Rights is clear in saying that Congress has no authority to pass legislation like this. Just like the Second Amendment says our gun rights “shall not be infringed,” the First Amendment says “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech.”
3. The Supreme Court was right earlier this year in the Citizens United case. Sen. John McCain -- the author of the Campaign Finance Reform law (otherwise known as the Incumbent Protection Act) -- was wrong. Americans, and the groups they choose to associate with, should be able to criticize Congress in the days and weeks leading up to an election WITHOUT BEING GAGGED OR FORCED TO JUMP THROUGH HOOPS that are mandated by Congress.

The ability of American citizens to communicate with their elected officials is one of the most important rights that help preserve our freedoms. In fact, of all the forms of speech protected by the First Amendment, political speech is at the top of the list.
This is exactly what the Supreme Court said earlier this year, in Citizens United v. FEC, when it ruled unconstitutional huge portions of the McCain-Feingold law, otherwise known as the Incumbent Protection Act.
Now, in an effort to undo the victory at the Supreme Court, liberals in Congress are attempting to pass the so-called DISCLOSE Act, which would severely limit the ability of GOA to communicate to our members and the general public.
This unconstitutional bill could come to the floor of the House as early as Thursday.
Sadly, as we reported yesterday, some in the pro-gun community have abandoned the principle of protecting the free speech rights of all Americans, so long as their ox is not being gored in this instance.
The NRA, which had previously opposed the DISCLOSE Act, has now accepted a deal to exempt that organization from the bill.
This is a startling about-face by the association.
When the Supreme Court ruled in favor of political speech in Citizens United, NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre praised the decision, saying, "This ruling is a victory for anyone who believes that the First Amendment applies to each and every one of us.... This is a defeat for arrogant elitists who wanted to carve out free speech as a privilege for themselves and deny it to the rest of us." (Emphasis added.)
That's a far cry from the NRA statement to Congress this week regarding legislation specifically designed to undo that Supreme Court decision.
"On June 14, 2010, Democratic leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives pledged that H.R. 5175 [DISCLOSE Act] would be amended to exempt groups like the NRA, that meet certain criteria, from its onerous restrictions on political speech," reads the statement.
"As a result, and as long as that remains the case, the NRA will not be involved in final consideration of the House bill."
Apparently it's ok to "carve out" a little free speech if you're in the role of the "elitists."
But the misguided NRA exemption will leave millions and millions of gun owners and sportsmen belonging to dozens of different organizations out in the cold.
We cannot allow this to happen. An attack on our First Amendment rights is a direct assault on our Second Amendment rights. After all, if GOA can't alert you about legislation affecting your Second Amendment rights, then we cannot protect those rights.
Of course, that's precisely what the politicians in Washington want. Shut out the voices of the "commoners" like gun owners and Tea Party activists who are coming to -- in the words of Senate candidate Rand Paul of Kentucky -- "take our government back!"
There's a reason the Bill of Rights is considered as an entire unit, and an attack on one part of the Constitution poses a threat to the whole document.
In short, if GOA loses this battle, all political organizations -- of any size -- will ultimately lose.
ACTION: Please ask your congressman to vote against the anti-gun DISCLOSE Act. This bill could come to the floor of the House as early as Thursday, June 17, 2010. Here's what you can do:
1. Urge your congressman to oppose HR 5175. You can use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send a pre-written message to your Representative.
2. Urge the NRA to change its position and stand with Gun Owners of America. You know that GOA is the organization that consistently refuses to compromise on principle. Even still, GOA has fought alongside the NRA many times to fight unconstitutional legislation, and it is imperative that we fight side-by-side on this issue as well. It has often been said that, "We either hang together or we will hang alone." But impress upon the NRA management that being the last one hung doesn't make the situation any better. You can call the NRA at (800) 392-VOTE (8683).
----- Pre-written letter -----
Dear Representative:
Please oppose the DISCLOSE Act (H.R. 5175).
The manner in which this bill is moving forward is as despicable as the health care bill -- with backroom deals and special favors being doled out in order to ram this down the throats of the American people.
This bill is a threat to the privacy of individuals and, by gagging the voices of groups like Gun Owners of America, it is silencing my voice as well.
My ability to protect my Second Amendment rights relies on the First Amendment's right to freely and openly communicate with government officials, who at one time were called "public servants."
I agree with GOA that this bill is an unconstitutional sham that will have a chilling effect upon my free speech.
Please vote NO on HR 5175.
Sincerely,
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Quote of the Day: The Constitution was based upon the fact the federal government had exceedingly limited powers. It was only allowed to do eighteen very limited things -- the enumerated powers, period. And everything else belonged to the states and the individuals to regulate. - Peter McWilliams
A personal message from Jim Babka . . .
Best-selling author Peter McWilliams died ten years ago today, June 14, 2000.
I remember when I heard the news. I can still feel the sickness and anger that I felt that day.
I didn't know Peter personally, but I admired him. Some of my colleagues were good friends or acquaintances of his.
Peter was an eloquent champion of limited government and personal freedom. But his life was cut short by the War on Drugs. The federal government denied him the medication he needed to live and thrive.
What he went through, I wouldn't wish on anyone, let alone my family and friends. But we have it in our power to prevent similar tragedies from happening to others. Please tell Congress to return to the Constitution, and end the insane War on Drugs.
You may copy or borrow from the following letter . . .
Today marks a cruel anniversary in the barbaric history of the War on Drugs. On this day, ten years ago, the federal government caused the death of the best-selling author Peter McWilliams.
Do you know his story?
* In 1996 Peter was diagnosed with cancer and AIDS
* The medications he needed to treat these diseases caused extreme vomiting, and he could not keep them down long enough for them to work
* That same year, Proposition 215 legalized medical marijuana in California
* Under the recommendation of four physicians, Peter started using marijuana.
* The marijuana controlled his nausea, restored his appetite, and allowed his medications to work
Marijuana saved Peter's life, for the moment. This led him to fund research into medical marijuana and to start a business supplying it to buyer's cooperatives. The DEA took notice, raided and trashed his home, and even confiscated his computer, which contained the manuscript of his latest book.
Peter was charged with being a "drug kingpin!" And then, he was hamstrung, legally. The federal judge in the case took away his defense, barring any mention of . . .
* California's medical marijuana law
* his terminal illness
* how medical marijuana allowed him to keep down his medication and prolong his life
While the legal process dragged on, the government prevented Peter from using the marijuana that controlled his nausea. Peter was required to pass drug tests. He complied, even though his life was at risk, because . . .
* Peter's mother and brother had to put up their homes as collateral to post his bail
* If he failed the test, their homes would have been seized by the government
Peter's health deteriorated until he died at the age of 50. The vomiting had taken a tremendous toll on his alimentary canal, as well as his heart, and even his teeth. Despite the suffering, he never lost his sense of humor. And the reason I most admired him was that he felt sympathy for his tormentors, rather than rage. http://www.wnd.com/index.php?pageId=508
Marijuana saved Peter's life, but the War on Drugs destroyed it.
Peter's most noted book was "Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do." It promoted the idea that each person can do whatever they please with their own bodies and property, so long as they don't interfere with the right of others to do the same. So let me ask you:
* What business is it of yours what people choose to do with their bodies and property?
* Where in the Constitution is the federal government empowered to deny people like Peter McWilliams the medicine they need?
Sadly, Peter wasn't the only victim of your War on Drugs. He was just one victim among many. The long list of your victims includes . . .
* terminally ill patients for whom marijuana (or some other illegal drug) could ease pain and nausea
* people with psychological problems for whom now-illegal drugs could help calm them or clear their minds
* young people whose futures are ruined not because of drugs, but because of a "criminal" record
* innocent adults and children on our streets, in Mexico, and across the world caught in drug turf warfare
* innocent victims of no-knock SWAT raids and asset forfeiture
* young people who get hooked on drugs precisely because, unlike legal drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol, they're available to be bought and sold on the streets and school grounds
The United States leads the world in incarceration rates, mostly because of non-violent, consensual crimes like drug possession. Apparently President Obama wants even more people in prison. He wants increased funding for interdiction, law enforcement, and the continuation of bloody drug wars across the border.
I suggest you do something else. Read and learn from Peter's books - especially "Nobody's Business." And then put an end to this stupid, immoral, and unconstitutional War on Drugs.

I'll make it short and sweet. Yes there is. But do not fool yourselves, there is no man or woman who can give us hope.
We need to think clearly and look at the big picture. Obama didn't turn out to be the great hope that those who supported him hoped for. yes, he brought about change, but it was a change from bad to worse.
Yes, we will get some people in office who will fight to restore our nation to its core values, back to the way the founding fathers intended it to be and they will even have some success at doing it.
However, even those people will let us down, they will fall, they will falter and some may give up.
But you see, even knowing all these things, I still have hope, because, I do not put my faith in man or woman, my faith is in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
He is the one who has given us the ultimate gift of liberty, free from the bondage of sin's stronghold and in him we have hope.

Obama Moves to Silence Gun Groups and Other Political Opponents
-- Bill clears committee hurdle, going to the House floor soon
Gun Owners of America E-Mail Alert
8001 Forbes Place, Suite 102, Springfield, VA 22151
Phone: 703-321-8585 / FAX: 703-321-8408
http://www.gunowners.org
Tuesday, June 8, 2010
Fresh from his efforts to seize government control of the health services sector (ObamaCare) and the financial markets ("finance reform"), Barack Obama has a new priority: silence his political opposition.
As satisfying as it was for Obama to seize control of one-sixth of the economy, he has had to suffer protest from the "little people" (like us). So he is pushing the Orwellian "DISCLOSE" bill (HR 5175) to make sure gun groups and other pro-freedom forces cannot mobilize their members in the upcoming elections.
When Obama says "disclose," what he really means is "disclose gun group membership lists"
Not surprisingly, these efforts to shut down free speech don't apply to Obama allies, like Democratic-leaning labor unions. They only apply to groups which are not reliable Obama allies, like Gun Owners of America.
But, for those groups whose free speech is targeted for Obama's wrath under this bill, the consequences are severe:
* Under Title II of the bill, GOA (and other groups, as well as many bloggers) who merely mention public officials within 60 days of an election could be required to file onerous disclosures -- potentially including their membership lists.
* Also under Title II, GOA could be required to spend as much as half of the time of a 30-second ad on government-written disclosures.
* In addition, Sections 201 through 203 would potentially put the government's snooping eyes on any American who voices a political opinion, despite the fact that the Supreme Court, in Buckley v. Valeo, declared that Americans have a right to voice their opinion to an unlimited extent, if unconnected with a political campaign.
Here's an idea: If Obama is so irritated at the Supreme Court's defense of political free speech by groups like GOA, why doesn't he apply his sleazy new rules to his political allies, as well?
ACTION: Please urge your congressman to vote against the anti-gun HR 5175. This bill has moved out of committee and has now been placed on the House calendar.
You can use the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at http://www.gunowners.org/activism.htm to send a pre-written message to your Representative.
----- Pre-written letter -----
Dear Representative:
I urge you to oppose HR 5175, a bill that will deny the free speech rights of all Americans. Under Title II of this bill:
* Groups like Gun Owners of America (and other groups, as well as many bloggers) who merely mention public officials within 60 days of an election could be required to file onerous disclosures -- potentially including their membership lists -- even though the Supreme Court has previously ruled in NAACP v. Alabama that membership lists (like those of GOA's) are off limits to government control.
* Also, groups like GOA and the NRA could be required to spend as much as half of the time of a 30-second ad on government-written disclosures.
Here's an idea: If Obama is so irritated at the Supreme Court's defense of political free speech by groups like GOA, why doesn't he apply the new rules in HR 5175 to his political allies (like the labor unions), as well?
Suffice it to say, if you care anything about the First or Second Amendments, you will vote against HR 5175. GOA will be scoring this vote on their rating of Congress.
Sincerely,

Is this a desperate attempt to increase ratings or are networks revealing their true master?
A OneNewsNow.com article just revealed a new show that blasphemes our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The name is the show is JC. The show makes a mockery of our faith and our beloved creator.
This show does its best to be just as equally or even more reviling than the JC show on Comedy Central.
They are promoting the show on the likes of Facebook and other social networking sites with images like this. In the image, the character is wearing a T-shirt with “Satan Heart Me.”

Then of course on the various pages of its web site, they have a Devil’s Daily Affirmation. The one pictured below reads “Do evil every day, You may not change the world, but you’ll have more fun.”
The poster page displays posters with various sayings. This is another copious way to inundate impressionable minds with messages of pure evil. Some of the posters read. “Screw the Whales, Save Hell,” “It’s Cool to be Cruel,” “Live Evil,” and Be part of the Damnation.”
God’s word tells us “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;” (Mathew 5:44 KJV).
It is imperative that we pray for those who reject Christ and his teachings. It is also imperative for us to reject these types of programs and any advertisers who participate in the shows.
Just remember that as Christians, we need to show a godly love for those who hate us. Take a stand, but do so with the kindness that the Lord has shown to us all that have our faith rooted in Him.
“I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should not abide in darkness.
And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day “(John 12:46-48 KJV).
These types of shows should not distract us from the commission that God has given us and that is to continue to spread his word so that the unbelievers are saved from eternal damnation.

http://bit.ly/9jw5ag
So much corruption, so little time.
Americans are seeing their liberties and freedoms vanish faster than Jimmy Hoffa. Yet, the Obama administration's "open and transparent government" is no where to be seen.
* Health Care reform otherwise known as healthcare control was written and passed despite the fact that the American people spoke loud and clear about it.
* Billions of taxpayer dollars to bailout automakers the terms hidden under a TARP away from public view passed without voter approval.
*Judge Sotomayor with a clear and present racial attitude towards "old white men" was confirmed into the supreme court.
* Elena Kagan is Obama's latest supreme court nominee and member of his cabinet. Of course she has no experience at any trials as a lawyer or judge. But hey, that doesn't matter to Obama's "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours attitude."
* Sestak was offered a job to not run for office. last time I checked it was illegal to manipulate federal elections. Of course, both the Obama Administration and Sestak have clammed up about the issue.
* Andrew Romanoff, who is challenging Senator Michael Bennet, an Obama ally, in the Colorado Democratic primary, has stated that he was offered three administration posts as an alternative to his Senate campaign.
* We also have the BP Oil spill. BP will actually make millions over the "accident." Their goal is to continue to siphon oil from the broken well all the while We the Taxpayers fund the cleanup efforts and pay higher prices at the pump and at the grocery stores.
"Based on government estimates of the flow rate, the mangled well could produce oil valued at as much as $85 million over the next 60 days, until a relief well is complete and the well is capped permanently.
The people who own the deepwater site that's leased to BP — U.S. taxpayers — could see a more modest windfall. The Treasury could be due as much as $328,125 in royalties daily, or $19 million total over 60 days. Further, under its lease BP also must pay royalties on the oil lost in the spill, which would mean another $13.5 million.
McClatchy's calculation uses a government tally of 25,000 barrels flowing from the well each day and the 18.75 percent royalty rate applicable to oil from the BP well, and assumes that oil is selling at an average of $70 a barrel. Thursday's spot price hovered around $74.
The money that's due Uncle Sam and the added new revenue for BP from capturing the leaking oil raise many questions about the financial penalties that could be levied when something goes badly wrong with a deepwater oil well." Read more: www.mcclatchydc.com
In November, we will be able to send many of the lawbreakers, err lawmakers back to their hometowns with their heads held in shame for their misdeeds and in 2012, we can send the rest home.
* False unemployment rates and false information. It's a good thing Obama wasn't crafted from an old cobbler, his nose would be stretched across the country by now.
What will history have to say about the Obama administration? You tell me.

Quote of the Day: "It will be of little avail to the people that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read, or so incoherent that they cannot be understood; if they be repealed before they are promulgated, or undergo such incessant changes that no man who knows what the law is today can guess what it will be tomorrow." -- James Madison (1751-1836), Father of the Constitution, 4th US President, Source: "Federalist" # 62
Politicians have a standard cure for every problem -- REGULATION. But what happens when there are so many regulations that not even the regulators can know them all, or understand what their consequences are? A case in point . . .
Widespread reliance on credit rating agencies, and a lack of knowledge about how those agencies were regulated, were major contributors to the 2008 financial meltdown.
Just this one example (explained in our sample letter below) is enough reason to reject the so-called financial reform bills being put forward by Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. Complicated regulations helped cause the 2008 mess, and they are NO part of the solution.
If you agree, please send Congress a letter telling them so.
You may borrow from or copy from this sample letter . . .
Wall Street is already the most regulated sector of the economy. Too many regulations means that even the regulators don't know them all. Jeffrey Friedman of the Cato Institute shows how this helped cause the 2008 financial meltdown. http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/v32n1/cpr32n1-1.html
It appears that both the banks and the Federal Reserve were unaware that a 1975 SEC rule turned S&P, Moody's, and Fitch into a legally protected oligopoly, protecting them from competition from other rating agencies!
* Commercial banks believed in the soundness of the ratings from these agencies
* Other federal regulators wrongly believed S&P, Moody's, and Fitch were subject to "market discipline"
* But because these agencies were actually protected from competition, they got sloppy, and provided unreliable ratings
* This caused many financial institutions to purchase bad mortgage pools
In other words . . .
Regulators were unaware of the regulations! So how will MORE regulations help?
New regulations constantly address "the unintended consequences of previous regulations." They never really fix anything.
Instead of over-regulating the economy, strike at the root with real reform . . .
* End subsidies and bailouts -- make companies feel the consequences of their actions
* Stop creating monopolies, as you did with the credit rating companies
More regulations cause chaos, confusion, and catastrophe. Freer markets promote caution, transparency, and long-term growth. Therefore, I want you to oppose the Frank-Dodd financial reform bill.
