| « Take Action - Keep the Heat on Senator Reid! | URGENT: Senate vote on "Financial Reform" this week » |
Trust us, We will Protect Your Data, We're from the Government. I've heard that one time too many. I could go on and on about examples of the government who is entrusted with some of our most intimate details have lost confidence since the passage of Real ID
You can see many examples of personal data from medical records, bank, universities and more, lost lap tops, stolen data from workers, data breaches, lost backup tapes and much much more at www.privacyrights.org Beth Givens has dedicated a great deal of time and effort to ensure that your information is kept private and only used for the purposes for which you have provided it to various businesses.
Congress when they passed the Real ID in 2005 knew full well the American People would not be deceived into accepting a national ID card. But they touted the Real ID as a means to protect us from terrorists and to ensure that our drivers licenses' would be secure.
So along with the Real ID Act of 2005, one piece of additional legislation was to be adapted to protect our identifying information. It is known as the Drivers Privacy Protection Act or DPPA. This piece of legislation not only does not protect our private information, but it actually allows the DMV to sell, share or rent any and all of your data to private corporations for whatever they want to do with it.

The 5th Circuit court of Texas just ruled that Companies Can Buy Bulk DMV Records
"Private companies can use this information to prevent insurance fraud, verify a worker's driver's license, notify the owner of a towed or impounded vehicle, and conduct research and surveys, among other permissible uses. Government agencies, law enforcement officers and licensed private investigators are also authorized to use DMV records.
The panel concluded that it's legal for someone to buy DMV records in bulk "for the purpose of making permissible actual use" of those records, "even if that person does not actually use every single item of information therein.
Defendants included research companies, online database operators, grocery chains, insurance companies, employee screening services, technology businesses and consulting companies."
I toured NC and spoke to many groups and churches about the dangers of Real ID and the Drivers Not so Private Privacy Protection Act.
Perhaps, people will listen now. Perhaps, they will urge their legislators to stop this madness, or perhaps instead vote in those who will repeal or re-write this law to include some real protections for Americans, or perhaps Americans will remain silent on the issue and become the easy target of identity thieves.
