HR 2749 - voice your opinion

Below is an open letter that I have written to my representatives who will shortly be voting on HR 2749. This bill gives overwhelming authority to the FDA, whose track record is rather spotty in my opinion, and has the potential to be very damaging to small farmers, family farms, farmers markets and community supported agriculture. Please consider writing to your representatives about this issue and voicing your opinion or call The US Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. Tell them NO TO HR 2749!

Dear Honorable Representative,

I am writing to voice my opposition to HR 2749. It is my understanding that this bill will ultimately remove my ability to have choice in where I spend my food dollars. Furthermore it has the potential to be most harmful to small farmers and local growers, the very people I wish to support.

Giving the FDA the power to make warrantless and unjustified searches of personal properties flies in the face of everything that our country stands for. Imposing fees to manage this program would create higher expenses for the consumer (with the costs that will necessarily have to be passed on in order to meet overly stringent but undefined regulations), yet those expenses will not do anything to improve food safety, they will only create more bureaucracy.

This bill does nothing to focus on the major causes of food borne illness such as unsanitized large agribusiness facilities, poor oversight practices by the FDA and the focus of big agribusiness on profit rather than meeting the needs of the consumer. It also does not address any of the issues of food safety from foreign countries which have in the past proven to be of concern.

I am asking you to support the existence of small family farms, sustainable agriculture and freedom of food choice for the consumer. Please vote no on HR 2749.
